With so many huge acts in and out of our doors, it’s easy to forget those that are out there, tirelessly working their way up to the top who deserve your attention. This week, we’re putting the spotlight on the young, fearless popstar, Sody.
For Fans Of: Halsey, Anne-Marie, Lorde
Essential Listening: ‘Maybe It Was Me’ and ‘Wasted Youth’
The rulebook of pop is being rewritten and it’s thanks to fierce females like Dua Lipa and Halsey that artists are able to voice their power and dominate the charts. 2018 has already seen the likes of Sigrid and Anne-Marie make their mark, but there’s one more name you need to add to the list of empowering women, and that name is Sody.
At only 18 years old, Sody has developed a completely raw style of writing. Her voice, soulful and strong, sings of the difficulties that young women face as they grow through adulthood. Sincere and emotional, her latest single, ‘Maybe It Was Me’ is a love song stripped bare, focusing on apologising and accepting wrong doings from both sides of a relationship, proving that Sody’s talent is wise beyond her years.
Announcing herself as an artist back in 2016 with the lo-fi pop ballad, ‘Wasted Youth’ – a duet with fellow newcomer, Martin Luke Brown, Sody has since spent her time perfecting her songwriting and grabbing the attention of Sony Music’s Relentless Records and BBC Introducing.
Her debut EP, Youth is a four-track masterpiece. Each song allows her stunning vocals to lead the way, husky in parts and commanding in others, it’s cutting-edge pop at its finest. And it’s this handful of songs that landed her a spot performing at Glastonbury 2017, a small feat for an artist still in the early stages of her career.
With a label now behind her, (the same one that’s home to Steve Aoki and Bryson Tiller, no less) things are accelerating forward. A second EP is in the works, one that will assert her independence and self-worth and truly mark her as an artist that’s here to make a difference.
She’ll also be joining label-mate, Tom Walker on his headline run throughout October and whilst she’s on the road, will be visiting schools across the country to give motivational talks and exclusive performances to students, offering a dose of inspiration for the younger generation.
Sody is an artist who truly cares, both for her craft and for the world around her and is a breath of fresh air in the industry. Everyone should start taking notes, because she’s about to change the face of pop music as we know it.
