Essential Listening: '7 Minutes' and 'Waves'
If you thought 2018 was a good year for singer-songwriters, then just wait until you see what this year has to offer.
Acoustic music is weaving its way back into the mainstream, with the likes of George Ezra, Lewis Capaldi and more releasing songs that hit you like a summer’s breeze and that’ll have you questioning everything you’re feeling inside. Now, there’s a new artist you need to keep your eyes on and his name is Dean Lewis.
Hailing from Australia, Dean first started making his mark in music with his debut single, ‘Waves’. A brooding number that’s brought to life by heart-pounding drum patterns and Dean’s husky tones, it grabs the listener instantly. With that one song Dean found success coming at him thick and fast, with TV shows including Suits and Riverdale picking up the track for their most dramatic moments.
From there came his first EP, Same Kind Of Different. Awash with floating melodies that are just made for long journeys and singing at the top of your lungs, it’s five tracks of pure and honest songwriting from Lewis, with a cover of fellow Aussie, Amy Shark, thrown in for good measure.
Throughout his music, Dean speaks of love and all the emotions that come with it – both the good and the bad. The darker, more hurtful side is transformed into something beautiful in ‘Let Go’, whilst ‘Lose My Mind’ could be straight out of a Mumford and Sons catalogue, all high-spirited and brimming with harmonies, you can almost feel the Australian sea flowing throughout each guitar line. Like a rollercoaster you don’t want to get off, Dean's songs take you through your brightest and darkest days, and with it you get some of the finest songwriting of recent times.
You only have to look at Dean’s schedule from the past year to see that this is something that people worldwide are connecting with. His previous headline London show was upgraded due to phenomenal demand and having sold out O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire - his biggest show in the capital to date - he’s added another one because fans are so desperate to witness him in action.
Not only that but Ellen Degeneres invited him to perform on her show, Isle Of Wight Festival have booked him for their grandeurs affair this summer and despite only releasing his new single, ‘7 Minutes’ less than two weeks ago, it’s already gained nearly six million streams on Spotify. With an album in the works, it looks like things are only going to get better and busier from here on out and frankly, we can’t wait to see what’s next.
