Back in December, the BBC revealed their annual list of who’s going to dominate the music world over the next year (you can see more of that here), but seven months in, how are the nominees getting on? Take a look below.
Not only was she the overall winner of the BBC Sound of 2018, but Sigrid has gone on to become the biggest breakout star of the year. Churning out pop bangers at an alarming rate, like the undeniably infectious ‘Strangers’ and ‘High Five’, the Norwegian singer is quite possibly the most lovable and bubbly star to ever grace the music industry. Following a sold out headline tour earlier this year, she’s now hitting some pretty substantial venues on a winter run, which will only solidify her popstar status.

Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi burst onto the scene with his emotional (68 million streams and counting) ballad, ‘Bruises’ back in March last year and he’s been breaking hearts across the country with his melancholic melodies ever since. After dropping his debut EP, Bloom at the end of last year and with two more heartbreaking singles under his belt, he’s managed to notch up tours with Sam Smith and Rag ‘N’ Bone Man as well as selling out any headline show he wishes to play. If you want to see him live before the year is out, you better be quick.

Speaking of Lewis Capaldi, if you were lucky enough to catch him on tour last November, you would have experienced the vintage folk sounds of Jade Bird. Taking on old Americana influences and giving them a modern twist, the 20 year-old singer-songwriter first made ears prick up with the release of her Something American EP, but it was breezy single, ‘Lottery’ which has sent her catapulting into the spotlight in 2018. Though she’s scheduled a full-band tour during the winter, her music will certainly keep you feeling all warm and fuzzy during the colder months.

If you’ve managed to get this far through 2018 without hearing Pale Waves, then you’re clearly doing something wrong! Goth on the surface but glittering pop underneath, the Manchester quartet have taken the airwaves by storm, with ‘Television Romance’ and ‘There’s A Honey’ getting frequent exposure. Several magazine covers and an EP later and Pale Waves have taken 2018 by the horns and they’re heading straight for another sold out run of headline dates to round off their jam-packed festival season.

The weird and wonderful world of Superorganism is a place of psychedelic pop music, where everyone is free to be themselves. And, in a time when there appears to be a lot of uncertainty, it’s quite nice to be able to lose yourself in the multi-cultural collective’s layers upon layers of technicolour sounds. Their self-titled debut album dropped in March and has seen their fanbase grow globally, as everyone jumps on the Superorganism wave.

If you’ve switched the telly on at some point in the past month or so, you probably would have heard Tom Walker’s powerful tones bellowing at you while a phone advert plays in the background. His smash single, ‘Leave A Light On’ saw Tom become known for having the most heavenly voice, with its soulful, yet husky tones hitting you like a pain in your chest. He’s been spending much of the past few months playing every festival under the sun and putting the finishing touches to his debut album, What A Time To Be Alive, and what a time it is to be alive, as he prepares for his biggest headline tour to date.

London rapper Yxng Bane has been leaving his mark across the R&B scene throughout 2018. Whether it’s due to his *insert fire emoji* collaborations, such as the Banx & Ranx and Ella Eyre anthem ‘Answerphone’ or his cruising with the top down single, ‘Vroom’ – his dancehall-infused rhythms have had people groovin’ and moovin’ their way into the summer. Having recently dropped a mixtape with D-Block Europe and with friends in all the right places, we can’t wait to see what surprises he throws up on his headline tour.

REX ORANGE COUNTY
Making even the most talented of musicians look like amateurs is Rex Orange County, a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer who fuses elements of jazz, pop and indie to create the most appetising of sounds. Dropping his second, self-released album, Apricot Princess last year, he then appeared on Tyler, The Creator’s album Flower Boy and the world found their new favourite artist. Despite only embarking on his debut headline tour earlier this year, Rex is now set to play venues some artists could only dream of before the year is out, proof that this is one man creating something very special indeed.

There’s no denying that urban music is riding high in the music industry in 2018 and Not3s is one of the artists at the top of the genre. First making his name back in 2016 with single ‘Addison Lee’, he worked tirelessly on his afro-bashment style of grime music and has since teamed up with notable (no pun intended) acts such as Mabel, AJ Tracey and Maleek Berry to continue his domination within the scene.
