Forever Indie

Posted: Wednesday 19 July 2017

You don't have to travel back to the 90s for your fill of indie goodness. Sure, a lot of our indie playlist essentials blossomed from Britpop shenanigans and the post punk wave, but the wheel kept turning and continues to produce countless bands we now call our favourites (including one band on our list who only formed in 2015!). As we wave the Forever Indie flag, we explore some of the top bands to step onto the scene, some of the tracks you need in your life and where you can see them all performing LIVE.

The Pigeon Detectives

Who are they? 2007 bore witness to the phenomenal rise of five friends from Leeds as they released the debut album that would become a platinum-selling record. The Pigeon Detectives were born five years prior and released their first single in 2005, but Wait for Me really bolstered their success. Ten years on and Matt Bowman, Oliver Main, Ryan Wilson, Dave Best and Jimmi Naylor celebrate the anniversary with a special tour.

Ride

Who are they? Ride emerged from the shoegazing scene of the late 80s and quickly established themselves as a band to watch. By 1990 they released their debut album, Nowhere, to a round of applause by critics and fans alike. Unsurprisingly so, as each guitar strum, drumbeat and thumping bassline harmoniously worked to elevate Andy Bell's almost hypnotising vocals.

Who are they? The Horrors made their first live performance at The Spread Eagle in London back in 2005, before grabbing critics and the public by the collar with their debut single, 'Sheena Is a Parasite'. It was their sophomore album, Primary Colours that made waves, earning them a Mercury Prize nomination, a spot on the UK charts and NME's coveted first place in the 50 Best Albums of 2009.

The Twang

Who are they? The Twang's Love It When I Feel Like This is another gem carved from 2007's indie scene. The band, formed in Birmingham circa 2004, peaked at number three on the UK charts with the debut that spawned favourites like 'Wide Awake'. Fast forward to 2017 - a whirlwind of festival performances, sold out tours and collaborations thrown in for good measure - and the band are celebrating the anniversary of the album with a special tour.
