Kodaline

After a little time away to refresh and remind themselves why they love doing what they do, Irish quartet, Kodaline, triumphantly returned last year with third full-length, Politics Of Living. Their most explorative and sonically progressive material to date, it’s still Kodaline at its core, but it’s the sound of a band with fresh eyes and ears making the music they’ve always wanted to make. Piano melodies swirl around your mind, soft vocal harmonies soothe your soul, while electronic elements seep in, taking the songs to another dimension, culminating in a big, warming collection of sing-a-long anthems.

Bombay Bicycle Club

It’s been five years since Bombay Bicycle Club released an album and three since they went on hiatus, but as they reunited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut album, I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose, they thankfully decided to continue where they left off and started writing new material. The outcome of which, is the dreamy comeback single, ‘Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You)’ and the announcement of new album, Everything Else Has Gone Wrong. Adored for their cinematic, indie-folk sound, jangly guitars and moving melodies, you can delve right back into their back catalogue and find a song to suit your mood. Once you’ve done that, you have the pleasure of reliving it all when they kick off 2020 by heading out on a long-awaited headline tour.

Sam Fender

What a year it’s been for Sam Fender. The Geordie upstart has catapulted into the spotlight off the back of his critically acclaimed and politically-charged singles, ‘Hypersonic Missiles’ and ‘Dead Boys’, and his debut album shot straight to the number one spot upon release. Not only that, but he sold out every single headline date within moments of them going on sale and keeps adding more shows to meet the demand. Then again, when you listen to his gloomy, indie, Springsteen-inspired anthems, it’s easy to see why the world has fallen for his northern charm. Whether it’s the gentle guitar strum of ‘Two People’ or the driving vocals of ‘Call Me Lover’, there’s a song to match each autumnal day on the album, so pop it on repeat and watch as the leaves float on by.

Cigarettes After Sex

Once you’re done listening to Amber Run’s new record and questioning everything you’ve ever known about love, move onto the new record from ambient-pop group, Cigarettes After Sex. Their second full-length, Cry is an extension on from their debut and continues to delve deep into the complexity of love, leaving you in a dream-like state from the first listen. Gloriously gloomy and magically woeful, ‘Heavenly’ is the first taste of the songs that came out of a relocation to Mallorca and a two-year process to get the album perfect. Taking inspiration from all areas, whether it be movie soundtracks or Shania Twain classics, the band have incorporated a piece of anything that made them feel something and they hope that with these songs, you can feel something, too.

Bear's Den

Since their formation, Bear’s Den have had a knack for writing songs that connect with people on a deeply personal level, and on third album, So that you might hear me, they’ve taken that connection to a whole new level. Loosely themed around the idea of wanting to reach out to someone who cannot be reached, the album swells with soaring electronics and bold choruses, whilst still retaining the intimacy that has forever been entwined in their music. It’s an album made for lonely nights, for nights shared with friends and for adventures unknown. There’s both hope and sorrow within its words, there’s more instruments involved than you can probably name and it is, quite possibly, their most beautiful piece of work yet.

Aldous Harding

New Zealand indie-folk singer, Aldous Harding, has been surrounded by music since a young age and now, with her third album, Designer, she’s reached a pivotal point in her career. Another complex, but beautiful record, it’ll leave you bemused but besotted with every word, note and tale laced within its nine tracks. Pushing the boundaries of what it is to be a folk artist, Aldous’ inspirations cover all aspects of art and creativity, as elements of experimental indie and gothic pop worm their way into her songs with ease, slotting in neatly amongst the soft strumming of her guitar. Some may call it avant-garde, but most will just accept it as a delightful and other-worldly slice of modern music.

Rhys Lewis

Rhys Lewis has been rising up through the ranks this year, capturing people’s attention with his brooding ballads and his willingness to bare all through his lyrics. His latest EP release, the five-track, In Between Minds, is a powerful and brave collection of songs that focus on both his own, and the world’s anxieties, learning to accept your feelings and deal with those heavier emotions. Largely written on his guitar and a piano, the EP is music in its rawest form, stripped back to its purest elements, as his husky, dulcet voice takes you through the story of each song. Earning his stripes on the live circuit supporting Freya Ridings, Sigrid and JP Cooper, Rhys is now gearing up for his debut headline tour and we can guarantee it’s worth getting out from under your duvet for.

The Twilight Sad

If you like your music a little less folk but still just as moody, then The Twilight Sad are for you. The Scottish shoegaze band released their fifth album, IT WON/T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME earlier this year and it marked their first ever Top 20 record, evidence enough that this is truly, a very special album indeed. After an extensive stint supporting The Cure, the band isolated themselves in remote studios to slowly piece together the workings of the record, and although in many ways it still has the luscious, dark and noisy undertones of a Twilight Sad record, this is the first time the band have found a bit of hope. They’ve fought their battles and written a completely unstoppable album to prove it, they’ve pushed themselves harder than before and the rewards have been fruitful, so all that’s left to do now, is see them perform the new songs in all their glory at their biggest headline shows to date.

The acoustic guitars and banjo are still present, but now the drums thunder louder than ever and their voices are bold and powerful, yet still gentle enough to send a shiver down your spine. The ideal companion to a long autumn walk, or a night curled by the fire, Wildwood Kin are there to whisk away your worries and leave you in a blissful haze as you watch the world go by.
