Six Bands Who Met at Uni

Posted: Thursday 19 October 2017

Ahhh, University. It could well be the best three years of your life. It’s your first chance at true independence, an opportunity to learn new things and further your career, plus you get to meet people you may be friends with for the rest of your life. There’s even a chance that you’ll start a band with some of your newly made pals and if things work out like they did for those below, you could be headlining venues across the country in no time at all. Yep, here’s our definitive list of bands who met at uni…

Chase & Status

English drum and bass duo Chase & Status, otherwise known as Saul Milton (Chase) and Will Kennard (Status), came together when both were attending Universities in Manchester.  Though Will dropped out to focus on music, Saul continued his studies, achieving an honours in English and Humanities, before devoting his time to the band. Now, they’re one of the most respected drum and bass acts in the world, have performed to some of the biggest crowds across the globe and have just released their fourth full-length album, titled Tribe. They return for a special one-off headline show at O2 Academy Brixton in November.

Everything Everything

Three of the original members of Everything Everything met whilst they were at school, however it wasn’t until lead vocalist Jonathan Higgs went to Salford University and met bass player Jeremy Pritchard that the band started to form. Everything Everything’s early singles, such as ‘Photoshop Handsome’ and ‘MY KZ, UR BF’ gained them a lot of attention from music industry professionals and before long they released their debut album Man Alive. Fast forward to 2017 and the band have released their fourth album and are preparing for their biggest headline UK tour to date.

Fickle Friends

Fickle Friends are one of the most hotly tipped bands of 2017 and it’s thanks to their University choices that they all met. Singer Natassja met drummer Sam Morris when the two studied at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, before they continued their studies at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute in Brighton, where they met fellow band members Chris, Harry and Jack. With their debut album in their works and following a summer of spellbinding performances, things are only going to get bigger and better for the indie-pop outfit.

London Grammar

Though both vocalist Hannah Reid and guitarist Dan Rothman grew up in London, it wasn’t until they met in halls of residence at University of Northampton that they became friends and started collaborating. Completed by Northampton local Dominic Major, the dream-pop trio moved back to London after completing their studies to put everything into music and fortunately, it paid off. Their debut album If You Wait reached number two in the UK album charts, whilst the follow-up, Truth Is A Beautiful Thing, (which was released earlier this year) hit the top spot.

Since their formation, the band have gone on to release their debut album, won two Ivor Novello Awards and a Grammy Award, and their single ‘Rather Be’ became one of the fastest selling singles of 2014. The band are currently working on their second record and preparing for their upcoming headline UK tour, which kicks off at the end of October.
