With so many huge acts in and out of our doors, it’s easy to forget those that are out there, tirelessly working their way up to the top who deserve your attention. This week, we’re putting the spotlight on dark, dreamy-pop four-piece, Swimming Girls.

Picture this, you’re driving through the city at night in a beat-up Mustang. It’s raining and you’re driving far away from the person who just broke your heart into a thousand pieces. You need a soundtrack to fit this very moment in your life, that soundtrack is Swimming Girls.
Okay so that’s a scenario fit for an 80s movie, but that’s exactly where Swimming Girl’s music derives from. Dark, glittering pop music that flirts with indie guitars and a grunge aesthetic.
Hailing from Bristol, Swimming Girls are a four-piece who are fixated on pop culture from the glorious 70s and 80s eras, taking influence from artists like The Cure and Cyndi Lauper, as well as the cinematic work of David Lynch. If you take all of that and give it a modern twist, with sun-soaked harmonies, huge choruses and a rock-hard attitude, then you’re close to understanding what this band are all about.
Making their arrival known with debut single, ‘Tastes Like Money’ last year, the band have spent much of 2018 establishing themselves as a band to keep a close eye on. ‘Back Of Your Car’ landed in January, with its sparkling melodies and infectious synths, showcasing the band as masters of creating perfect slices of pop music. This then led to the band quickly being snapped up on the live circuit. Local friends, Bad Sounds popped them on their hometown, sold out headline show, Fickle Friends took them out on tour and The Great Escape and Dot To Dot added them to the summer’s festival line-ups.
More recently, Swimming Girls dished out another gem in the form of, ‘Asking For It’. Premiered by Phil Taggart on BBC Radio One, the song is the ultimate break-up anthem for the indie kids of a new generation. With a dark lyrical tone accompanied by hazy, surf-rock vibes, it’s undoubtedly their finest work yet and just begs to be sung along to.
Fortunately, you won’t have to wait long to do exactly that. Swimming Girls will be joining Pale Waves on their upcoming UK headline tour, so make sure you get through the doors early to witness this magical band in action.
