Congratulations to Frank Grimes and The Disasters for beating the competition in Sheffield. O2 Academy caught up with them ahead of the Fireball Fuelling The Fire Tour to talk about The Simpsons and drinking with The Dalai Lama.
First things first; where’d the name come from?
Simon: "I wanted us to be called 'The Disasters', but there were a few bands with that name knocking about already. I happened to be watching The Simpsons episode with Frank Grimes in. It's kind of a pastiche of the formulaic 'and the' names, like Elvis Costello and the Attractions etc. and we thought it was funny."
Talk us through your songwriting process – do you have any strange rituals like picking song themes out of a hat or from fortune cookies?
Simon: "I usually come up with a hook and create a song around whatever words I've pulled out of the ether for the hook. Most of the time, it's loosely based around themes of existentialism and the usual love-song shit. The rest is padded out with serial killers and general macabre topics."
Steven: "I go through phases of sitting down with a guitar and laptop, smashing out basic demos of three or four songs at a time. These are played through and refined at rehearsal with the other gents, before being demoed for Si to put his words over."
We know it’s a tough decision, but who’s your favourite band on the bill?
"They are all mint to be fair. At a push we'd say Anti-Flag, even though they aren't playing the Sheffield date - The Skints are definitely an adequate replacement!"
If you were to win Fireball’s Hottest Band 2018, how would you celebrate it?
"Do we have a better chance of winning if we say we'd celebrate with multiple bottles of Fireball?"
If you could knock back a Fireball shot with any three people (dead or alive), who would it be?
Simon: "The Dalai Lama, Michael Palin & Morrissey."
Dan: "Greg Graffin, Milo from Descendents aaaaaaaaand Gandhi."
Scott:"Mr Blobby and the Chuckle Brothers."
Steven: "John, Paul & George. Soz Ringo."
