An Interview with Ray BLK

Posted: Tuesday 7 November 2017

After completing a huge festival circuit this summer, Ray BLK continues her meteoric rise with a headline tour. She took a break from her hectic schedule to talk to us about collaborating with some of the biggest artists, winning the BBC's Sound of 2017 and what to expect from her live shows this autumn.

You’ve had a busy festival season this past summer, playing Reading & Leeds, Bestival and Glastonbury. Was there one moment that was particularly special for you?

"Playing Glastonbury was a big moment for me. It's such a legendary festival and to go from playing my first festival the year before with hardly anyone in the audience, to playing a huge crowd who were all singing the words back at Glastonbury was SO emotional and overwhelming."

There are some pretty great collaborations on your latest album release, Durt, including SG Lewis, Wretch 32 and Stormzy.  What we want to know is whether there’s someone you’re itching to work with in the future?

"Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West are my dream collaborators. They both inspire me so much as artists."

Winning the BBC’s Sound of 2017 is a massive accomplishment, but you’re also the first unsigned artist to do so. You must feel immensely proud of that achievement?

"I'm incredibly proud of being the first unsigned artist to win the BBC sound of. I hope it inspires other artists to chase their dreams and lets them know that nothing is impossible even when the odds are against you."

With your shows coming up in December, what can fans expect from your live performances?

"My shows are always energetic, so they better get ready to sing their hearts out, give me sass and participate. I love getting the crowd involved."

Finally, you’ve been dubbed ‘the Lauryn Hill of the UK’ by the media, but how would you describe your sound?

"I would say I'm classic R&B/soul singer with a new school sound. It's Mary J Blige meets PARTYNEXTDOOR."
