A Q&A with Fireball Fuelling the Fire O2 Academy Liverpool Finalist - Meet The Robots

Posted: Monday 25 September 2017

Congratulations to Meet The Robots on beating the competition in Liverpool. O2 Academy caught up with them ahead of the Fireball Fuelling The Fire Tour to talk about the future of robots, binging on McDonald's and autocorrecting lyrics.

First things first; where’d the name come from?

"Science fiction and robotics have always been an inspiration to us. Lots of people are scared of robots and what might happen in the future, but we think robots are here to help us. We're building them to be our friends and take care of us. Inevitably one day the robots will have their own personalities and for the first time, we'll get to 'Meet The Robots'."

Talk us through your songwriting process – do you have any strange rituals like picking song themes out of a hat or from fortune cookies?

"Usually we jam stuff out as a band, or one of us may have a song that they've written and we work on that together in the studio. Sometimes it even helps to go acoustic and crack out the bongos. We often use autocorrect on our phones if we're stuck with writing lyrics! We just start typing stuff and see what it gets corrected to. I suppose in that sense our phones should get a songwriting credit... 'lyrics by Meet The Robots and Samsung Galaxy S5'."

We know it’s a tough decision, but who’s your favourite band on the bill?

"Hate to go with the obvious one, but it's gotta be Reel Big Fish! They're such an awesome live band and they've got the songs to back them up... to be honest though, all the bands are great."

If you were to win Fireball’s Hottest Band 2018, how would you celebrate it?

"Three words: McDonald's food binge - literally order everything on the menu. Ask for weird combos, like a Big Mac but with the burgers replaced by chicken nuggets. We may even decide once and for all which is the most supreme of the sauces."

If you could knock back a Fireball shot with any three people (dead or alive), who would it be?

"Jesus Christ, Freddie Mercury and Gary Busey, no question."
