Beating the competition in the Sheffield heats are rock 'n rollers, The Velcro Teddy Bears. Scuzz TV presenter and journalist, Matt Stocks caught up with them to talk about how the band started, The Pogues and what we can expect to see from them at The Pogues Irish Whiskey Presents: A Shot at Discovery – The Final on Thursday 27 April.
What band made you want to start a band?
“There wasn’t just one band. Essentially it was just music and what can be put across by music that was the real inspiration for me. I’ve obviously got my favourite bands, but I wouldn’t say that one of them really put me in.”
How would you describe The Velcro Teddy Bears to someone who’s never heard you before?
“We started as an acoustic, almost skiffle-y band before going electric, and there’s definitely a lot of country roots in there as well. We love Creedence Clearwater Revival. And we love big ‘60s and ‘70s mod rock chords. We call it Northern Fried Rock ‘N’ Roll.”
What can we expect from your set at the final?
“It’ll just be all the bangers. We saved a couple of songs back so we’ll be cracking them out, and we’re bringing a coach full of people down as well so it’ll be full of happy vibes.”
How will you celebrate if you win?
“Well there’s a crate of The Pogues Irish Whiskey to get drunk for starters. We got through the bottle we were given at the preliminaries in about half an hour, so I don’t think it’ll take us too long to do that. It’ll just be amazing. The quality of the judges that are on the panel is fantastic and the opportunity to play in front of those kind of people is a real chance in a lifetime. So if we get any stamp of approval from them then it’ll be the biggest compliment.”
Well good luck. The final question has to be, what’s your favourite song by The Pogues?
“I have to say all of them I’m afraid. You can’t just listen to one Pogues song.”
