There aren’t many things better than discovering a new artist whose music you instantly connect with. Whether they’re touring the nation making their name or supporting big acts globally, we’re here to put a spotlight on the musically-gifted people with a bright future ahead of them. This week, we’re introducing you to the multi-instrumental, genre-bending group, Easy Life.
For Fans Of: Superfood, Peace, Rex Orange County
Essential Listening: 'Nightmares' and 'Sunday'
When you look at the list of shows, festivals and songs on Easy Life’s resume, it’d be extremely hard to believe that the band have only been together for just over a year, but that’s the truth. From humble beginnings as a farmer, Murray - who handles everything from vocals, to keys, to trumpet and whatever other instruments you want to throw at him – decided to follow his love for jazz and hip hop and create something completely new and exciting.
Teaming up with long-term friend and bass player, Sam, the two began working on what would become the foundations of Easy Life. Quickly joined by drummer, Cass, guitarist, Louis and percussionist-come-keys player, Jordan, and the group was complete. Individually they all have strong influences that spread far across the musical landscape and somehow, they’ve managed to bring them all together to create a kaleidoscopic sound that transcends beyond anything in this universe.
Combining gentle hip hop beats with delicious brass elements and just a slight twang of indie guitars, Easy Life have created the equivalent to a fruit salad. There’s so many flavours, so many textures but yet your taste buds are totally alive and practically dancing in your mouth. That’s what happens when you first listen to this Leicestershire five-piece and it’s quite a delightful feeling.
A handful of songs and their Creature Habits Mixtape is all it has taken to see them skyrocket into the mainstream, alongside a gruelling tour schedule which has seen them cover most postcodes in the country. The hard work is paying off though, as they’re selling out some of the UK’s most notorious venues with ease and they’ve had the likes of Annie Mac and Jools Holland singing their praises.
Jumping from field-to-field last summer, the band found themselves performing in front of hundreds of people at Reading and Leeds, Y Not, Standon Calling and opening for Liam Gallagher at his Finsbury Park extravaganza. This year, they’ve set their sights even higher and will be taking on the US for Coachella and The Governors Ball before returning for another blistering summer and an autumn headline tour. There’s also their Spaceships Mixtape, which kicked off 2019 with six more lo-fi treats that give us a further taste of what we can expect from their debut album, and here’s hoping we don’t have to wait too long to find out what the rest sounds like.
If you're wondering just how Easy Life pull off their multi-dimensional sound live, then come and see if for yourself:
